Okay, here's a breakdown of what happened in Honduras:
Wednesday 5th:
arrived and unloaded our bins of medical supplies at the surgery center
Thursday & Friday: 4 orthopedic surgeons saw approx 240 patients
Saturday: we organized the bodega (storage building) with all of the
surgical & medical supplies and then went on a tour of the ranch. The rest of the
group arrived as well. The two urologists saw I think close to 100 patients.
Sunday: more organizing and getting things ready for surgery. The doctor I
work for (the one that started/spearheaded the surgery center) took a large
group of us on a hike. It ended up lasting 2 hours, but was an awesome workout!
Monday-Thursday: Surgery days! We had 5 orthopedic surgeons, 1
podiatrist, 1 ENT (ear, nose & throat), and two urologists. There are 3 ORs
and we did a total of 56 surgeries--the most they have ever done since opening!
I think the total of patient consults between all the MDs and specialties was
around 400!
Friday: we restocked and cleaned the surgery center and made
lists of the things that needed to be reordered or could be donated. The
afternoon was spent free hanging out with all the kids.
The days were very long, waking up at 4-4:15, working 12-15 hour days and going to bed later
than we should have! The food was good, but predictable. We had rice, eggs and
beans for breakfast and rice, beans and chicken for lunch! Dr. D's wife is
Italian and brought her two sisters with, so we had pasta every night for
dinner! I got to assist in four different surgeries and learned so much. The
biggest hurdle I had was the language. I know a lot of spanish, but am not
anywhere near fluent. I need to work on that!
I hope to go back soon, but that will depend on Dr. D, finances and PTO available!!
